3 HoursPrivate TourIndoor & Air-Conditioned🏆 Aga Khan Award
The Nubian Museum is one of Aswan's calmest and most rewarding sights — an award-winning museum that tells the story of Nubia from prehistory through the pharaohs, Christianity and Islam to the great UNESCO rescue of the monuments before the waters of Lake Nasser rose. The galleries are indoors and air-conditioned, so it is a comfortable visit at any time of day, while the gardens and open-air pieces are at their loveliest in the softer light of late afternoon. Photography with a standard camera is allowed on a separate ticket, and a guided visit of a couple of hours is enough to take in the highlights without rushing.

The Nubian Museum, Aswan — Overview
The Nubian Museum in Aswan — officially the International Museum of Nubia — opened in 1997 as a moving tribute to the culture and civilisation of Nubia, the ancient land that stretched along the Nile from southern Egypt deep into Sudan. Designed by the Egyptian architect Mahmoud El-Hakim in a style that echoes traditional Nubian building, it won the Aga Khan Award for Architecture in 2001.
Inside, some three thousand artefacts trace the region's story from prehistoric times through the pharaohs, the Christian and Islamic eras, and up to the great UNESCO campaign that rescued Nubia's monuments before Lake Nasser rose behind the High Dam. Highlights include a striking quartzite statue of a 25th-dynasty priest of Amun, the remarkable Ballana horse armour, six-thousand-year-old painted pottery, and a full-scale diorama of a traditional Nubian house that brings the living culture of the region vividly to life.
Set on a cliff above the Nile and surrounded by gardens with open-air monuments, a waterway and a Fatimid cemetery, the museum is cool, uncrowded and beautifully told — for many travellers the single best introduction to Nubia and its people.
