The Nubian Village, Aswan — Overview

Across the Nile from Aswan, on the west bank opposite Soheil Island, the Nubian village of Gharb Soheil is one of the most colourful and welcoming places in all of Egypt. You reach it as the Nubians always have — by boat — gliding past Elephantine Island, the pink Mausoleum of the Aga Khan and golden sand dunes before the rainbow-painted houses come into view along the shore.

The Nubians are descendants of one of Africa's oldest civilisations, with their own language, music and traditions. Many families here were resettled after the building of the High Dam flooded their ancestral lands beneath Lake Nasser, and the village keeps that heritage vividly alive. Streets of powder-blue, yellow and orange houses are decorated with murals of camels, crocodiles and scenes of daily life, and doors are almost always open to visitors.

Inside a traditional Nubian home you are welcomed with hibiscus or mint tea and a warm "Ahlan wa sahlan", and there is time to wander the little souk for spices, beads and crafts, to ride a camel along the shore, or to have a henna design painted by a local artist. Relaxed, photogenic and full of genuine hospitality, it is a joyful, human counterpoint to the great temples and museums of the south.
