A relaxed half-day in Aswan: cross the Nile by motorboat or felucca to the colourful Nubian village of Gharb Soheil — rainbow-painted houses, a welcome tea in a traditional Nubian home, a lively craft souk and the chance to ride a camel. About 4 hours, from $25 per person.
4 HoursPrivate TourBoat Ride Included🎨 Colourful Village
The Nubian village of Gharb Soheil sits on the west bank of the Nile, reached by a short and scenic motorboat or felucca ride from Aswan — the journey past Elephantine Island and the Mausoleum of the Aga Khan is part of the pleasure. It is a relaxed, walkable half-day: bright painted houses and murals, a welcome glass of hibiscus tea in a traditional Nubian home, a lively souk of spices and crafts, and the chance to ride a camel or have a henna design done. Late afternoon is especially lovely for the softer light and cooler air, and it ends with a beautiful Nile sunset. It is an easy, joyful contrast to Aswan's ancient monuments and a favourite with families.

The Nubian Village, Aswan — Overview
Across the Nile from Aswan, on the west bank opposite Soheil Island, the Nubian village of Gharb Soheil is one of the most colourful and welcoming places in all of Egypt. You reach it as the Nubians always have — by boat — gliding past Elephantine Island, the pink Mausoleum of the Aga Khan and golden sand dunes before the rainbow-painted houses come into view along the shore.
The Nubians are descendants of one of Africa's oldest civilisations, with their own language, music and traditions. Many families here were resettled after the building of the High Dam flooded their ancestral lands beneath Lake Nasser, and the village keeps that heritage vividly alive. Streets of powder-blue, yellow and orange houses are decorated with murals of camels, crocodiles and scenes of daily life, and doors are almost always open to visitors.
Inside a traditional Nubian home you are welcomed with hibiscus or mint tea and a warm "Ahlan wa sahlan", and there is time to wander the little souk for spices, beads and crafts, to ride a camel along the shore, or to have a henna design painted by a local artist. Relaxed, photogenic and full of genuine hospitality, it is a joyful, human counterpoint to the great temples and museums of the south.

Tour FAQ
How long is the tour?
About 4 hours in total — a scenic boat ride each way, hotel transfers, and roughly 3 hours to enjoy the village at a relaxed pace.
How do we get to the village?
The village is on the west bank, so you cross the Nile by boat. Depending on conditions we use a motorboat or a traditional felucca; the ride past Elephantine Island is part of the experience.
What will we do there?
Stroll the colourful streets, visit a traditional Nubian home for welcome tea, browse the spice and craft souk, and — if you like — ride a camel or have a henna design done.
Is hotel pickup included?
Yes. Private pickup and drop-off at your Aswan hotel or Nile cruise ship are included in an air-conditioned vehicle, along with the return boat ride.
When is the best time to go?
Any time is enjoyable, but late afternoon is especially lovely for the softer light and cooler temperatures, and it ends with a beautiful sunset over the Nile.
Can children join?
Absolutely. Infants up to 4 are free, and children from 4 to under 12 receive a 50% discount. The boat ride, camel ride and warm welcome make it a favourite with families.
